PUZZLER

LAST ISSUE WE QUERIED: “Many battles end with nightfall; this one ended with the light. The battle features in one of England’s most famous fictional romances. James Scott was executed nine days later. What could this battle be?”
The Battle of Sedgemoor, July 6, 1685, fought near Bridgwater, Somerset, was the climactic battle of Monmouth’s Rebellion. Scott, the Protestant Duke of Monmouth and Charles II’s illegitimate son, was captured shortly thereafter and beheaded in London. R.D. Blackmore describes the battle in Lorna Doone, when his hero, John Ridd, accidentally stumbles upon the conflict.
Now, let’s puzzle on this: This seaside market town is home to both a university and a world-class library. It’s also about as far away from a motorway as you can get.

Oh, do venture the Puzzler with aplomb. Join a cast of many and play the Puzzler. Email your answer to:

Students from Santa Fe R-X High School in Alma, Mo. made their way to The Turf Tavern for lunch. A fine time was had by all.[/caption]

I RECENTLY TOOK A TRIP to England with high school students and my son. I packed the magazine containing the article on Oxford (July 2012), since we were given free time in this great city. While there, we had to pick a place to eat. While your article gave The Eagle and Child as a great pub with a rich history, we decided that it would be far too busy and looked for something closer to the campus. I pulled out my magazine and we decided on your other option—The Turf. We had a great time finding the venue (your description was dead-on) and we enjoyed a fabulous meal.
Thank you so much for your articles and great travel tips. I will definitely use your articles again when traveling with students!
