Among the oldest Christian sites in England, Glastonbury, Somerset, is rich with history and lore. Legend has it that Joseph of Arimathea brought the Holy Grail here to England and founded the abbey in the 1st century. In 1191, the tomb of King Arthur and Guinevere were purportedly discovered buried beneath the High Altar of the abbey church. Once one of the richest foundations in England, even in dramatic ruins Glastonbury Abbey continues to be the site of two annual pilgrimages, in June and July, attracting visitors from across Europe.
