As part of ongoing anniversary celebrations, the Royal Mint has released a collection of iconic 50p coins celebrating military history - including The Battle of Britain, The Battle of Hastings and the D-Day landings

The anniversary is remembering the revolutionary seven-sided 50p coin, first introduced in 1969, and this military set follows the popular 50p culture set which was unveiled in January this year.

Spanning almost one thousand years of history, the military set - which is now on sale - includes five 50p coins marking the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, 50 years since the D-Day Landings and 150 years since the Victoria Cross was introduced.

Some of the sets will be incredibly rare. Only 75 gold proof sets have been created, and the price reflects their rarity at £3,825. Silver proof sets will cost £225 and 1,969 have been produced.

A proof coin set costs £90 and five of the brilliant uncirculated coins cost £45.

The set will also see the return of the Battle of Hastings 50p coin, long thought to be one of the most sought after in circulation.

The coin was originally launched in 2016 to remember the day when King Harold II was defeated by William the Conqueror, leading to the collapse of the English army.

There are around 6.7 million of them in existence, and they have been known to sell for as much as £3,595.

"The distinctive design of the 50p has become hugely popular since it was introduced in Britain 50 years ago," explained Nicola Howell, at The Royal Mint.

"Over the years, it’s been fantastic to launch commemorative versions of this popular coin to mark significant cultural and historic events for the nation.
