Tips and tidbits for travel and for fun
PENNY WISE
A Haven in St. David’s
MY HUSBAND AND I recently returned from a wonderful visit to the UK, including six days in Wales. I want to share the highest possible recommendation of our B&B in St. David’s.
Ramsey House sits on the outskirts of the beautiful small town of St. David’s, just a five-minute walk from the majestic cathedral and town center. Owned by Shaun and Suzanne Ellison, Ramsey House has bright, clean, spacious rooms with attractive decor and lovely linens. Breakfasts offer Shaun’s homemade granary bread and full Welsh fare, served attractively and with care.
Shaun optionally offers exquisite three-course dinners to guests of the house, and we have never had more beautifully presented or perfectly cooked meals elsewhere in our British travels. I especially remember the wild mushroom bisque, sea bass with spinach risotto and saffron sauce, and a decadent dark chocolate tart with creme anglais.

Beyond the lovely rooms and delectable food, the Ellisons are the most considerate hosts we have ever experienced. They arranged for taxis to pick us up at the Haverfordwest train station and on other occasions. They keep numerous ordnance survey maps in the lovely lounge to help guests pick out their routes. They offer wine in the late afternoon, and one of them always seems to be available to hear how a guest’s day turned out. They also will do a load of laundry for a small fee. Many places promise a warm and gracious welcome, but Suzanne and Shaun Ellison deliver, and deserve recognition.

PUZZLER
Last issue’s Puzzler we posed: A much-larger-than-life statue of the great Victorian poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson sits on the grass adjacent to one of England’s most majestic cathedrals. Where is this memorial to Tennyson?
Tennyson’s impressively simple memorial stands on the north lawn of Lincoln Cathedral, in the pastoral county of his youth.
Now, ponder this tricky puzzler. Sir Walter kindly included my tale in one of his most popular novels. My best friend’s grave lies in Hathersage churchyard, tended by the Royal Order of Foresters. Who would he be?
Do be a Puzzler player. Post a card to British Heritage at Weider History Group, 19300 Promenade Dr., Leesburg, VA 20176, or send an e-mail to BritishHeritage@weiderhistorygroup.com. We would always love to hear from you.
