Contrary to what you may imagine, a new report from the UK's Office for National Statistics (ONS) shows that it's actually the fairly well-to-do types who most often get trollied, mullered, leathered, bladdered, and lagered up--possibly because they can afford it. 18% of those earning £40,000 or more drink frequently, and that's more than twice as many (8%) as those earning less than £10,000. And the high earners were also twice as likely to binge drink.
Overall, the UK is pretty boozy place: "2.5 million (9%) drank more units in one day than the weekly recommended amount of 14 units." But don't call the ambulance just yet! Just to be clear, that's not quite as bad as it sounds. A "unit" is basically a shot. According to the fine print, that weekly limit of "14 units of alcohol is the equivalent of 6 pints of 4% beer," or, say, six glasses of wine. (Six drinks doesn't sound so terrible to us for a really good night, but maybe we just don't want to admit we actually have a problem.)
Unsurprisingly, Wales and Scotland have the highest percentage binge drinkers at 14% and 13%, respectively.
