A balcony room at the Lincoln Hotel on Eastgate proffers this evening view of neighboring Lincoln Cathedral just across the street. The daytime view is equally impressive. Centrally located in the heart of the old city, the Lincoln Hotel offers all the accoutrements of a contemporary three-star hotel just a block or two from the cobbled precincts of the cathedral and Lincoln Castle.

LAST ISSUE, our Readers Review invited readers to reflect on who you thought were under-appreciated heroes. Whose statue or monument, we asked, was missing from the public square. Retired newspaper reporter Joe Darby from Natchitoches, Louisiana, seeks to honor a well-deserving group of thousands whose individual names are all too unknown, “I think every English village, town and city would be proud to have a statue of an RAF fighter pilot from 1940.”
Jane Hixson of Reston, Virginia wrote, “Don’t know how often he’s feted with statuary, or if at all, but my pick for what hero is missing is T. E. Lawrence.” Overlooked Lawrence is. After due seeking, we were able to locate only a bust of Lawrence of Arabia in the crypt at St. Paul’s and the effigy on his alabaster sarcophagus in Wareham, Dorset, near his country cottage.

LAST ISSUE WE PUZZLED: “There’s a pretty civic garden near the Landmark Theatre and a Victorian bathing complex at Tunnels Beach. Where would we be at this seaside holiday town?”
Working harbor town as well as bucket-and-spade destination, the North Devon seaside holiday town of Ilfracombe has been attracting holiday-makers for generations. It makes a great base, also, to explore the gorgeous North Devon coastline from Minehead to Clovelly.
NOW, THIS IS A BIT PUZZLING: A Duke of Lancaster and an Earl of Leicester both made their mark in my history, and a Scotsman famously told part of my story. Where would I be?

Have Your Say!
“I’ve returned there again and again.” Many British Heritage readers have favorite places across our green and pleasant land–locales or hotels, villages or towns that have captured their imagination and to which they have returned perhaps several times, perhaps a dozen, over the years. Do you? Is there a place in Britain special to you that comes instantly in mind? Perhaps Bath or a village in Yorkshire, a favorite inn in Lynmouth—or even a London hotel that has felt like a second home for years? Or is it home, which you left years ago to become an expat on this side of the pond. Once again, here’s an invitation to share a glimpse of your Britain. Have your say.
