THE ROMAN INVASION of Britain initiated a period of sweeping change, beginning with a time of violent resistance to the outsiders and leading to an amalgamation of Celtic and Roman culture that included the rise of cities and great country estates, and the importation of European art and architecture.
Our September issue will explore ROMAN BRITAIN. The remains of this fascinating age still dot the British countryside, from the grand villas that were in many ways precursors of the English country houses of a later age, to the bustling urban centres with their temples, baths, and markets, to Hadrian’s Wall, the border fortification Roman engineers erected along the Empire’s north-west frontier.
