Tips and tidbits for travel and for fun

PENNY WISE

Mentioned in “Our Sceptered Isle”

ON RISING GROUND up above the pretty town of Bradford-On-Avon, the Leigh Park Hotel is a classic three-star country house hotel. Like so many such hotels, Leigh Park is a former manor house, with broad green lawns and all the old charm British Heritage readers love. Just half a dozen miles south of Bath off the A363, The Leigh Park is a delightful alternative to staying in the always-crowded Bath.

ALONG THE SEAFRONT of Eastbourne, an easy stroll from the pier, the Lansdowne Hotel is a classic resort hotel of the late Victorian age, sympathetically modernized with all the contemporary amenities. Lovely lounges facing the sea, a decidedly friendly staff and a great breakfast all make for a happy stay. Eastbourne itself is a delight to discover, and makes a good base from which to explore the coastline of East Sussex and Kent.
Both the Leigh Park and the Lansdowne are Best Western hotels. While each hotel in the group is pointedly individual in character, they are generally reasonably priced and consistent in quality. For booking stays in Britain, the Best Western Web site is an excellent resource: www.bestwestern.com.

PUZZLER

Last issue’s Puzzler we posed: “Sir Walter kindly included my tale in one of his most popular novels. My best friend’s grave lies in Hathersage churchyard, tended by the Royal Order of Foresters. Who would he be?”
That was a bit tricky, but the answer is Little John, whose marked grave does indeed lie in Hathersage, Derbyshire. The speaker is Robin Hood, whose story is told among many other places in Sir Walter Scott’s Ivanhoe.
Now, puzzle this project. I was the fourth largest city in Roman Britain. Later, as the capital of Powys, I might have been the capital of the historic King Arthur. Today, I am in the care of English Heritage. Where am I?
Do be a Puzzler player. Post a card to British Heritage at Weider History Group, 19300 Promenade Dr., Leesburg, VA 20176, or send an e-mail to [email protected]. We would always love to hear from you.
