York is a walled city located in North Yorkshire, England. The city is known for being the setting of many political events in England's history. In 71 AD, it was founded by the Romans as Eboracum and it went on to become the capital of Britannia Inferior, and later the kingdoms of Jorvik and Northumbria. York was a major center for wool trading in the Middle Ages, and became a capital of the Church of England.

The name "York" is a Latin name for "city". The first time this name is mentioned dates back to 95-104 AD on a wooden stylus tablet from a Roman fortress, as the name Eboracum. In 866 AD when the Danish army took over, they renamed the city Jorvik. The name transitioned into Yerk in the 14th, then Yourke in the 16th century, then Yarke in the 17th century.

Its local government is mainly set in the county town of Yorkshire, and its council composed of 47 councilors, and most consist of young people who negotiate with the other councilors to get better facilities for York's youth. It also operates on a standard Cabinet-style council - its members make decisions on their portfolio area.

York has many features for tourists to explore. There is the Theatre Royal, established in 1744, and it produces pantomimes that attract audiences from all over the country to see along with its star actor, Berwick Kaler. Plays are also performed in public if one is not interested in theatres - the York Mystery Plays are performed using transcripts based on the original medieval plays. In 2012, the York Mystery Plays were performed at St. Mary's Abbey in the York Museum Gardens.

Music is also one of the main attractions in York. It is home to the Academy of St. Olaves, a chamber orchestra located in St. Olave's Church. It was founded in 1978 by Charles Macdonald, which performs three concerts each year and once per year for Mass on Remembrance Sunday. Another venue is St. Margarets, a former church which was converted into the National Centre for Early music, a venue which hosts competitions and other events including the York Early Music Festival.

For food lovers, York is also a good venue for food culture. Since 1997, the city hosted an annual Festival of Food and Drink, where the aim of the festival is to show appreciation to the culinary culture in York and Yorkshire via promotion of local food production. The festival attracts visitors of up to 15,000 in 10 days from all over the country.
