An energetic and friendly young staff are just one of many strengths at Tthe Bull & Swan.[/caption]

Visiting Stamford, it’s an old coaching inn that fits the bill. The Bull & Swan has most recently joined Stamford’s great inn options. Describing itself as a venue of “Quirky Luxury,” the inn does indeed proffer superbly appointed accommodations and top quality, creative comestibles and libations. Right on the edge of the Burghley estate, The Bull and Swan is easy walking distance to all the prospects of this pretty market town.

I was first made rich with the wool trade, which supported the building of 14 medieval churches in town. Later, I became famous for my coaching inns, with more than 40 stagecoaches a day passing through town in Georgian times.”
Yes, we’re in Stamford, halfway along the Great North Road (the present A1) between London and York. Read more about it as we explore the town in “A Day to Visit Stamford,” p. 26. Of course, if you already read the story, you guessed immediately.
Now, let’s puzzle this. Dedicated to a 7th-century saint, I am unique in having three spires. The verbose Doctor was born within my shadow.

All things bright and beautiful, indeed. Amateur photographer Ian Peters, of nearby Rodham Common, captured the moment. Peters just happened to be driving by the village following a heavy thunderstorm, when he spotted the rainbow beaming down on the coronet of 12th-century Holy Trinity Church.[/caption]
