Boris Johnson and Queen Elizabeth

As is tradition, following his appointment as Prime Minister Boris Johnson held an audience with the Queen on Wednesday afternoon. This is a chance for him to accept the Queen's invitation to become Prime Minister.

In what could be described as a sign of things to come, however, everything was not quite plain sailing.

It is well documented that meetings between the Queen and the Prime Minister are supposed to remain completely private. The Queen is of course expected to remain neutral when it comes to politics, and her own political views are not well known.

So what was said?

According to a tweet by Vincent McAviney, an NBC news Foreign Correspondent, Boris Johnson was overheard speaking about how the Queen said 'I don't know why anyone would want the job'. He states that Johnson was told by Royal staff to not repeat things so loudly!

Good start Boris!

What does it mean?

In the grand scheme of things, this will presumably not affect the relationship between the Queen and the Prime Minister too much. They will undoubtedly have many more meetings and get more chances to get to know each other.

In spite of this it certainly isn't the best start. Johnson will no doubt want to stay in Queen Elizabeth's good books, and he would certainly be best advised to avoid breaking Royal protocol again.

After his meeting with the Queen, Johnson took to the podium outside of 10 Downing Street to address the public. He said this

''The people who bet against Britain are going to lose their shirts because we are going to restore trust in our democracy.

And we are going to fulfil the repeated promises of Parliament to the people and come out of the EU on October 31 no ifs or buts.''

Time will tell what is to happen next.
