"This picture was taken during my three-day visit to the Isle of Arran in August, 2016. I stayed at a B&B in Blackwaterfoot, a little village on the west coast of the island, and each evening I walked out from the village to the beautiful countryside. I took this shot from the beach next to Blackwaterfoot golf course, which bills itself as the only 12-hole course in the UK."

Tucked into the Firth of Clyde between Ayrshire and the Kintyre peninsula, the Isle of Arran gathers all the characteristics of the Hebrides into its 167 square miles. Catch the CalMac ferry from Ardrossan for the hour-long crossing to Brodick, the island’s commercial center, where Brodick Castle, historic seat of the Dukes of Hamilton, is now in care of the National Trust for Scotland. Half a dozen coastal villages and hamlets total a population of about 5,000 islanders. On Machrie Moor, near Blackwaterfoot, six ancient stone circles attest to the island’s popularity from Neolithic times. Mike Brown’s dramatic sunset photo looks west from Blackwaterfoot across the firth to Kintyre.
